Polar Ice Accumulation from Volcanically Induced Transient Atmospheres on the Moon

چکیده
Abstract Water ice exists at the lunar poles, but its origin, abundance, and distribution are not well understood. One potential source of water to poles is volcanic outgassing volatiles from interior subsequent condensation erupted vapor as surface ice. We investigate whether a viable for accumulation polar construct model that accounts outgassing, atmospheric escape space, over period peak activity (4–2 Ga) map resulting abundance using current temperature data Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Our suggests ∼41% total H 2 O mass this could have condensed in regions, with thicknesses up several hundreds meters. The south pole accumulates roughly twice north, southern deposits thicker. Typical modeled eruptions generate collisional atmospheres lifetimes ∼2500 yr. However, these episodic generally do persist between eruptions. Roughly 15% an atmosphere’s forms frost on nightside, while transient atmosphere persists. work volcanically active early Moon would been punctuated by short-lived, enabled efficient sequestration large quantities (8.2 × 10 15 kg) temporary diurnal availability all latitudes.

Evidence for water ice on the Moon: Results for anomalous polar craters from the LRO MiniRF imaging radar
[1] The Mini-RF radar instrument on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft mapped both lunar poles in two different RF wavelengths (complete mapping at 12.6 cm S-band and partial mapping at 4.2 cm X-band) in two look directions, removing much of the ambiguity of previous Earthand spacecraft-based radar mapping of the Moon’s polar regions. The poles are typical highland terrain, showing exp...
متن کاملThe spatial distribution of polar hydrogen deposits on the Moon
A new analysis of the Lunar Prospector epithermal neutron data is presented, providing an improved map of the distribution of hydrogen near to the lunar poles. This is achieved using a specially developed pixon image reconstruction algorithm to deconvolve the instrumental response of the Lunar Prospector’s neutron spectrometer from the observed data, while simultaneously suppressing the statist...

A long-term study by the US Geological Survey (USGS) suggests that recent changes in the quality and availability of sea ice in northern Alaska are the most likely explanation for a decrease in female polar bears bringing up cubs on sea ice and an increase in basing themselves on land. Researchers from the USGS used satellite telemetry to evaluate changes in the distribution of female nesting s...

Vanishing Polar Ice Sheets
Global temperatures have increased by 0.8◦C since instrumental records began, and the last decade has been the warmest. This warming has been closely linked to increasing greenhouse gas concentrations due to human activities. Arctic warming is leading to thinning and disappearance of sea ice on the Arctic Ocean and the increased melting of the Greenland ice sheet. In the last decade the Antarct...
